How we decide where the paywall goes

Too early and nobody is invested. Too late and nobody pays. The chart that settles the argument, and why it is different for every series.

Every series gives away some episodes for free. Choosing how many is the most consequential decision made about it after it is shot.

Too early, too late#

Ask for payment before a viewer cares and they leave. Wait too long and they have already had the satisfaction they came for.

The chart#

For each series we look at how many viewers unlock the next episode depending on where the free run ends. The curve rises, peaks, and falls again.

  • Before the story’s first turn, almost nobody unlocks.
  • Just after it, unlocks peak.
  • Well past it, viewers who have stayed are loyal but fewer of them remain.

Why it differs for every series#

The first turn arrives at a different episode in every story. A fast thriller might peak after two free episodes; a slower family drama after five.

What a good cliffhanger actually does

It is not the shock. It is the unanswered question the viewer carries into the next episode — and there is a measurable difference between the two.
