Eighteen months ago, Tamil-language originals were a small bet on the side of a Hindi-first slate. Today several of them sit among the most completed series on the platform.
What the numbers show#
Tamil originals do not attract the largest audiences. What sets them apart is completion: a viewer who starts one is unusually likely to finish it.
Why it worked#
- Stories were written in Tamil rather than translated into it, so the dialogue sounds like people talk.
- Settings are specific — a street, a family business, a town — rather than a generic city.
- Audiences found them through word of mouth more than through promotion.
“We stopped asking whether a story would travel and started asking whether it was true to where it came from.”
What comes next#
Telugu originals follow the same approach this quarter, and several Tamil series are being dubbed into Hindi — the reverse of how regional content has usually moved.
