What a good cliffhanger actually does

It is not the shock. It is the unanswered question the viewer carries into the next episode — and there is a measurable difference between the two.

Every episode of a short drama ends on a cliffhanger, which means the format has run an enormous experiment in what makes one work.

Shock versus question#

A shock ending shows something surprising. A question ending leaves something unresolved. Viewers react more strongly to the first, but they keep watching after the second.

“A shock is over the moment it lands. A question follows you into the next episode.”

Measuring it#

The clearest signal is how quickly viewers start the next episode. Question endings are followed by the next episode almost immediately; shock endings more often by a pause, and sometimes by leaving.
